McAg, an approved employer in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, is making a significant impact by supporting seasonal workers from the Pacific and Timor-Leste. These workers, often facing challenging circumstances in their home countries, are given opportunities through the PALM Scheme to earn remittance, which they use to uplift their families and communities. This initiative not only transforms lives but also provides a crucial labour source for the Australian horticultural industry, especially as other traditional sources are impacted by new legislation.

A compelling example of the positive impact of this program is the story of Sipora Puio, a dedicated seasonal worker from the Enga province in Papua New Guinea. Sipora joined McAg in September 2022 and has just completed her second stint in July 2024. Between her assignments in Australia, she utilized her earnings to make substantial investments back home.

In the period from June to October 2023, Sipora successfully opened a small convenience store near Port Moresby and built her first home. She hired three trucks to transport the building materials, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit and determination. Unfortunately, her home was among those demolished when the land was claimed by a local company, forcing the residents to evacuate.

Undeterred, Sipora and her family dismantled their home and transported the materials to her convenience store, where they now reside. She has since restocked her store, ensuring her family’s livelihood while she works in Australia. Sipora plans to return to McAg soon, with hopes of rebuilding a secure home for her family.

The story of Sipora Puio exemplifies the resilience and positive impact of the PALM Scheme. McAg, along with its host employers, continues to support many individuals like Sipora, helping them improve their personal circumstances and invest in their local communities. The contributions of these workers are vital to the Australian horticultural industry, underscoring the importance of such initiatives.

Without the PALM Scheme and the dedication of workers like Sipora, the Australian horticulture sector would face significant challenges. McAg remains committed to fostering these invaluable partnerships, ensuring a brighter future for both the workers and the industry.
